Kelly Walker

How would you describe your role at Jack Wills and how did you get into this area?

My role involves designing and developing the Womens' Wovens range with the Womenswear Design team. We are a small team, so it is always very busy and fast-paced. Together, we develop the collection from an initial concept for the season, working on colour, print and graphic direction. We then sketch new styles by hand, before eventually inputting them into CAD and sending them to our vendors overseas, with a lot of detailed information. We work very closely with the Womenswear Buying and the Garment Tech Design teams to fit and perfect the product before it makes it to our stores.

I studied Fashion Design at university, and after graduating I worked in Concept Design for a few years, which is essentially trend forecasting. It was a lot of fun and I learnt tonnes, but ultimately I really missed designing product. I recently moved back onto the Product Design department and I'm happier than ever!

What do you like the most about your role and team?

I love working as a part of a tight-knit team as well as the constant problem solving that comes with the role. Also, designing is fun! I feel very fortunate to be doing something so creative and something that I love.

What has been your career highlights at Jack?

I recently got back from a production trip in Hong Kong where I was able to meet our vendors (we speak constantly over email, but it was lovely to meet them face-to-face!) We were working on the SS19 collection and it was amazing to see our initial sketches coming to life.

How would you sum up the culture at Jack Wills?

We are all about the youthful spirit! It's a lot of fun and the teams are lovely. I've made some great friends in the 18 months I've been here.

What advice would you give someone who was starting at Jack?

It's a wild ride, but take every opportunity as it comes. It is a relatively small team, so there is a lot of opportunity to develop professionally here, which is great.

Tell us about your department at Jack Wills?

I work on the Product Design team, specifically on the Womenswear Wovens department with my lovely assistant Celia Schofield. We are responsible for designing womens' dresses, skirts, shirts, woven tops, trousers and denim. As a wider team we come up with seasonal stories, creative direction and colour palettes incorporating this into designing and developing our ranges in alignment with the brand.
