George Barnett

Last year, George Barnett’s album Animal Keeper debuted on BBC Radio 1 – not bad for a 20 year old. Even though he does all his own instrumentals, George still finds time to direct his own music videos.

First I liked nursery rhymes, then I liked serious music, but now I like nursery rhymes again.

How much time do you spend working?

It’s impossible for me to give myself designated work time, cause nothing will happen. And then something always happens when I’m least expecting it, so that despite the fact I have all the instruments I need and countless notepads at home, I am ONCE AGAIN forced to scribble an idea on the back of my hand.

What about your creature comforts?

I really like to be alone… That hasn’t happened for ages, but when I’m completely by myself for over a week something changes in me. I’ve written my best songs and come up with my best ideas when alone..

What did you want to be when you were little?

I always wanted to entertain. Piano and drums were my first instruments. When I was 4 years old and making my family laugh by pretending to be a chat show host, I fell off the sofa and split my head open on a speaker. I had loads of stitches in my forehead and remember thinking how brilliant I was.
