Meet Richard Nicoll, the new creative director of Jack Wills! He chats to us about his life as a designer, his love of London and the naughtiest thing he has ever done.

We are super excited to welcome Brit designer RICHARD NICOLL to join Jack Wills as creative director. Already at work on what we’ll be wearing from Spring 2015 and beyond, we clambered over mood boards and jumped over fabric samples to catch up with Richard in his design workshop at Jack Wills HQ.

JACK WILLS IS SUCH AN EXCITING BRAND…

It’s been a joy to get to know it better. It has such a strong DNA and an even stronger following. You can’t help but fall in love with it and find yourself being really loyal to it. The head office has a team that really cares about what Jack Wills stands for. I admire that sense of protectiveness and loyalty towards the brand.

THE DNA OF JACK WILLS IS COMPLETELY UNIQUE

Jack Wills is young, modern and about creating enduring British classics. It’s celebratory of a youthful, optimistic spirit, capturing a time everyone is nostalgic for. It’s playful, light and also authentic in that it’s timeless and not chasing trends slavishly. It’s wardrobing for young adults, I guess.

I AM MOST EXCITED ABOUT...

... Creating a new timelessness. I’m working on early Spring collections now. We have our sketch reviews happening today, so it’s really hectic. I hope to create more synergy across men’s and women’s, but also build the core classics Jack Wills does so well, and push them to become more ageless and timeless. Layered on top of that, there’s the younger, more ephemeral, fun stuff that we’ll be playing with a lot more.

I LIKE THE IDEA OF STRETCHING THE AUDIENCE UPWARDS

Jack Wills has the ability to dress our core customers when he or she has just got her first job out of university and wants to be smart and chic, with the Fabulously British twist Jack Wills is known for.

I LOST MY iPOD AND IT’S DRIVING ME CRAZY

If I found it, I’d be playing the new Neneh Cherry album on a loop.

I’M NOT NAUGHTY…

I was very sweet and quite good until I hit 16. Quite shy, I used to love charity shopping and hanging out with friends at the local crazy golf in Perth, leaning against the pool tables thinking we were very cool while listening to Suede, Morrissey and The Cure.

… ALTHOUGH I DID GET ARRESTED ONCE!

It was for shoplifting a CD when I was 15. It wasn’t even an album; it was just the single by Pop Will Eat Itself! I got into big trouble. It was so dumb.

I’M MOST PROUD OF MY FIRST COLLECTION AFTER GRADUATING FROM ST MARTINS

There’s always going to be a purity to the first ever collection, it’s like the first album. I feel like since then I have stayed true to myself, although probably I’m still emerging compared with some of my peers.

I DON’T WANT TO GIVE YOU TOO MANY HINTS ABOUT MY FIRST JACK WILLS COLLECTION…

Let’s just say my walls are covered in references from London in the 1960s and other extraordinarily creative cultural periods of British pop culture. It’s not going to be dull, put it that way.
